Halong Bay Cruise Packing Guide: What to Bring for Every Activity and Season

A good Halong Bay cruise packing guide starts with the day, not the suitcase. An overnight cruise with Milalux Cruises or Mila Grand Cruises moves from Tai Chi on the sundeck to kayaking, a cave or village visit, a sunset Happy Hour and a set dinner, all within about 24 hours. Each moment asks for something slightly different from your bag.
Our autumn and winter packing list covers layering from October to February in detail. This guide takes the other angles: what to pack for each activity, how the warm months of May to September change the bag, and a checklist you can print or screenshot.
A Halong Bay cruise packing guide comes down to five groups: quick-dry daywear and swimwear for kayaking and beach stops, closed shoes with grip for cave steps and village paths, one smart-casual outfit for dinner, sun and rain protection, and documents, adapter and medication. Cabins include two bottles of mineral water daily, so pack light in a soft bag.
What should you pack for each activity on a Halong Bay cruise?
Pack by activity: a light layer and comfortable shoes for Tai Chi, quick-dry clothes and secure sandals for kayaking, grippy closed shoes for cave steps and village paths, and smart-casual wear for dinner. The times below follow the ships’ 2 Days 1 Night schedules.
| Activity | What to wear | What to bring |
|---|---|---|
| Tai Chi on the sundeck (06:15 Milalux · 06:00 Mila Grand) | Loose, comfortable clothes; a light layer in cooler months | Flat, comfortable shoes |
| Kayaking or bamboo boat (Pearl Farm on Milalux · Dark & Bright Cave on Mila Grand) | Quick-dry top and shorts over swimwear | Strapped sandals or water shoes, waterproof phone pouch, hat |
| Beach stop and swimming (Titov Island on Milalux · Ba Trai Dao on both 3D2N itineraries) | Swimwear and a light cover-up | A second swimsuit, sunscreen, quick-dry towel if you like |
| Sung Sot Cave (Milalux) | Light, breathable clothes | Shoes with grip for the steep climb |
| Cycling to Viet Hai (Mila Grand 3D2N, Day 2) | Breathable top, shorts or light trousers | Secure closed shoes, small daypack, water bottle |
| Sunset Happy Hour (17:45 Milalux · 17:30 Mila Grand) | Relaxed resort wear | Sunglasses, light scarf or shawl |
| Dinner (19:30 Milalux · 19:00 Mila Grand) | Smart casual | A light layer if dinner is served on the Mila Grand sundeck |
| Night squid fishing | Long sleeves or a thin jacket, long trousers | Closed shoes, insect repellent |
Two entries deserve a closer look. The Sung Sot Cave visit on Milalux follows a steep climb on Bo Hon Island, and our Sales Kit recommends proper shoes when the steps are wet. On Mila Grand’s 3D2N itinerary, the cycle ride into Viet Hai Village takes about 30 minutes each way along a concrete lagoon road, up a small slope and through a tunnel cave, so closed shoes and breathable clothes make it more comfortable.
Mila Grand guests should also add swimwear for the outdoor heated Jacuzzi on the Sundeck, which Milalux does not have.

🧭 Cruise Director’s Insider Tip:
“Pack two bags in your head: a soft main bag that stays in the cabin and a small dry bag for excursions. Put swimwear, sunscreen, a water bottle and a phone pouch in the dry bag the night before. On the 3D2N itineraries the day boat leaves early, at 08:00 on Mila Grand and between 08:00 and 08:45 on Milalux, so a ready day bag saves a rushed morning.”
What changes in your bag in the warm season, from May to September?
In the warm months, trade layers for sun, rain and swim gear: breathable quick-dry clothes, a hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a compact rain jacket and a spare swimsuit. Vietnam’s tourism board describes summer on the bay as hot, with the possibility of storms, so flexibility matters more than a large wardrobe.
The Vietnam Tourism page for Ha Long lists September to November as the best period and describes autumn and spring as clear, calm days for cruising. The seasonal picture is covered in our best time to visit Halong Bay guide. Here we focus on the bag.
| Warm-season concern | What to pack | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Strong sun | Brimmed hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, light long-sleeve top | The CDC advises sunscreen, protective clothing and shade during the hottest hours, which it gives as 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. |
| Showers | Compact rain jacket or poncho, plastic bags for wet clothes | Quick-dry fabric and a bag for damp items keep the rest of the case dry |
| Time in the water | Two swimsuits, reusable water bottle | A dry swimsuit is ready for the next stop, and hydration is easier on excursions |
| Insects | Insect repellent | The CDC recommends repellent and covering exposed skin on village paths and cave visits |
| Changed schedule | Dry bag, flexible plans | Storms can shorten or change an outing |
Weather can change a plan even in good seasons. Kayaking, bamboo boating and swimming are offered weather permitting, and if a sailing is cancelled because of storms, bad weather or a port authority ban, our force majeure policy applies: a full refund or a change of date by agreement.
⚓ Captain’s Maritime Log:
“On the water, the schedule follows the weather, not the other way round. If heavy rain or strong wind arrives, the crew may adjust the programme. A thin rain layer and a dry bag cost very little and keep a changed plan from spoiling your day. Sailings are also subject to the instructions of the bay’s port authority.”
What does the cruise provide, and what can you leave at home?
Both ships include two bottles of mineral water in each cabin every day. Milalux cabins also come with towels, a bathrobe, slippers, a hair dryer and deluxe bathroom amenities, so you can leave most toiletries and a hair dryer at home and bring only your personal favourites.
Cabin space shapes the bag. Milalux Cruises has 20 cabins ranging from 22 m² to 44 m², while Mila Grand Cruises has 27 cabins ranging from 45 m² to 135 m². A soft bag is easier to store than a hard shell in any of them.
What to leave behind:
- Heavy jackets in the warm months. One thin layer for the evening is enough.
- High heels. Decks and stairs are wooden; flats or loafers are more comfortable.
- Several pairs of shoes. Three pairs cover everything: sneakers, water sandals and one smart-casual pair.
- Bulky towels and full toiletry sets. A small quick-dry towel is useful at beach stops; the rest is provided.
Hanoi to Tuan Chau transfers are not included in the cruise price. They can be booked as an add-on; see our transportation page. If you return to the same Hanoi hotel after the cruise, ask whether it can store your large suitcase.
What belongs on your printable Halong Bay cruise checklist?
Your checklist should cover five groups: documents, electronics, health and sun care, money, and optional comforts. Tick each line before you leave your hotel in Hanoi, because the road to Tuan Chau Marina is about 150 km and roughly 2.4 hours by car.
| Group | Items | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Documents | ☐ Passport and visa if applicable · ☐ Booking confirmation · ☐ Personal travel insurance papers | The cruise price includes onboard insurance; keep your own cover for the rest of your trip |
| Electronics | ☐ Phone or camera · ☐ Power bank · ☐ Universal travel adapter · ☐ Spare memory card | Vietnam’s mains electricity is 220V/50Hz; check hair tools before you travel |
| Health and sun | ☐ Sunscreen · ☐ Insect repellent · ☐ Prescription medicine · ☐ Motion-sickness remedy if you are sensitive | Bring enough medicine for the whole trip |
| Money | ☐ Small notes for tips · ☐ Cash or card for bar drinks and personal expenses | Tips, spa services and bar drinks are not included |
| Optional | ☐ Light scarf or shawl · ☐ Binoculars · ☐ Book or e-reader for the sundeck · ☐ Favourite snack | Nice to have, easy to skip |
Download maps, booking details and entertainment before you leave Hanoi, because mobile signal can vary among the limestone islands.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
What should I wear for kayaking on a Halong Bay cruise?
Quick-dry clothes over swimwear, with strapped sandals or water shoes. Kayaking is included in the cruise price, weather permitting, and guests step in and out of kayaks and bamboo boats. Add a hat, sunscreen and a waterproof phone pouch, and avoid cotton that stays damp.
Do I need to bring my own towel and toiletries?
Milalux cabins provide towels, a bathrobe, slippers, a hair dryer and deluxe bathroom amenities. Bring only the products you prefer. A small quick-dry towel is handy for beach stops. If you are sailing on Mila Grand, confirm towel arrangements for beach stops with our reservations team when you book.
What should I pack for a Halong Bay cruise in summer?
Pack for sun, heat and the chance of rain. Take breathable quick-dry clothes, a brimmed hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, a compact rain jacket and two swimsuits. Keep a dry bag for excursions, since storms can change the schedule in the warm months.
Are flip-flops enough for the whole cruise?
Flip-flops suit the beach and the cabin, but not every excursion. For the steep steps at Sung Sot Cave on Milalux or the bicycle ride to Viet Hai on Mila Grand, wear closed shoes with grip. Strapped sandals work well for kayaking and bamboo boats.
Do I still need my own travel insurance?
Yes, we recommend keeping your own cover. The cruise price includes onboard insurance, but it does not replace the insurance for flights, medical care or the rest of your trip. Keep your policy documents with your booking confirmation.
Should I bring cash on board?
A little, in small notes. Tips for the crew, guide and driver are not included, and drinks from the bar and restaurant are charged separately. Milalux guests settle their bill at the reception desk on the morning of check-out.
