Lan Ha Bay Cruise: The Quiet Limestone Bay Beside Halong

Lan Ha Bay seen from above: forested limestone islands around a sheltered green lagoon.

When travellers picture a bay cruise in northern Vietnam, they usually picture Halong Bay. A Lan Ha Bay cruise offers a quieter version of the same limestone scenery: the waters off Cat Ba Island, south of Halong, in the city of Hai Phong. The rock is the same karst. The route, the stops and the rhythm of the day are different.

This guide explains what Lan Ha Bay is, what Mila Grand Cruises actually visits, how Milalux Cruises reaches the bay, and how to prepare.

A Lan Ha Bay cruise explores the limestone waters off Cat Ba Island, south of Halong Bay. On Mila Grand Cruises, the 2 Days 1 Night route sails from Tuan Chau Marina to Dark & Bright Cave by kayak or bamboo boat, then Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba; the 3 Days 2 Nights adds Viet Hai Village and Ba Trai Dao beach.

What Is Lan Ha Bay and Where Is It?

Lan Ha Bay is a limestone bay east of Cat Ba Island in the port city of Hai Phong, linking Halong Bay with the Cat Ba archipelago. VietnamPlus reports about 400 islands, all covered in vegetation, across more than 7,000 hectares.

The Cat Ba archipelago has been a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve since 2004, and in September 2023 the World Heritage Committee added it to the Ha Long Bay property, creating the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago site (Vietnam National Authority of Tourism). The Mila Grand programme describes the Lan Ha route as one that stays away from the crowds of familiar tourist routes.

Why Cruise Lan Ha Bay? What You Actually See

An overnight cruise gives you time to reach the bay’s caves, beaches and Cat Ba’s forest without day-trip deadlines. On Mila Grand Cruises, the main stops are Dark & Bright Cave, Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba, Viet Hai Village and Ba Trai Dao beach.

  • Dark & Bright Cave (Hang Sang Toi). On Day 1 at 15:30 guests arrive at the cave, one of the most beautiful attractions in Lan Ha Bay according to the Mila Grand programme. You go by bamboo boat rowed by local people or paddle a kayak through the limestone arch into a calm lagoon, then swim in the cool water around the ship. Our Dark and Bright Cave guide covers the stop in detail.
  • Trung Trang Cave, Cat Ba Island. On the last morning at 07:30, guests travel about 30 minutes from Gia Luan into the Cat Ba World Biosphere Reserve to reach Trung Trang Cave, which the programme calls one of the most impressive caves on Cat Ba Island.
  • Viet Hai Village (3D2N only). The day boat leaves at 08:00 and reaches Viet Hai pier around 09:30. From there you cycle, or ride an electric car, for about 30 minutes through a mountain tunnel into the village; see the Viet Hai Village cycling guide.
  • Ba Trai Dao beach. On the 3D2N Day 2 afternoon, the water here is clear enough to see the bottom, and it suits swimming and kayaking.

Kayaking is included on both Mila Grand itineraries, weather permitting.

🌿 Local Naturalist:
“Cat Ba Island holds about 1,045 hectares of primaeval forest and is the only place the critically endangered Cat Ba langur lives, with roughly 60 to 70 animals remaining, according to Vietnam’s national tourism authority. On forest and village stops, keep to the path, keep your voice low and leave plants, shells and wildlife exactly where you found them.”

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is Lan Ha Bay part of Halong Bay?

No, they are neighbouring bays. Lan Ha Bay lies off Cat Ba Island in Hai Phong, south of Halong Bay in Quang Ninh, and shares the same limestone landscape. UNESCO added the Cat Ba archipelago to the Ha Long Bay World Heritage property in 2023.

Which Mila Cruises ship sails to Lan Ha Bay?

Mila Grand Cruises is the Lan Ha and Cat Ba ship. Its 27-cabin vessel sails the bay on both the 2D1N and 3D2N itineraries. Milalux Cruises sails the Halong route, and only its 3D2N programme includes a Day 2 excursion into Lan Ha Bay by day boat.

Can I visit Lan Ha Bay on a 2 Days 1 Night cruise?

Yes, on Mila Grand Cruises. The 2D1N includes Dark & Bright Cave on Day 1 and Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba the next morning. The Milalux 2D1N stays in Halong Bay and does not include a Lan Ha stop, so choose the ship before you choose the dates.

Is the Hanoi transfer included in the price?

No, it is an optional extra. The cruise price does not include the Hanoi–Tuan Chau transfer, so book a limousine separately if you want one. Check-in at the Private Lounge, Lot 20, is at 11:30.

Is a Lan Ha Bay cruise suitable for children?

Yes, with sensible planning. Children under 5 sharing the parents’ bed travel free, children aged 5 to 10 pay 75% of the adult rate, and guests aged 11 and over pay the adult rate. Families can choose a bamboo boat at Dark & Bright Cave, and Viet Hai offers an electric car instead of cycling.

What happens if the weather changes the plan?

Activities run when the weather allows. Kayaking, bamboo boating and swimming are offered weather permitting, and the crew may adjust the programme. If a sailing is cancelled for storms or a port-authority ban, force majeure applies: a full refund or a date change by agreement. Free cancellation applies only when you cancel more than 60 days before departure.
