Ti Top Island: The Viewpoint Climb and Crescent Beach in Halong Bay

Few stops on a Halong Bay cruise are as simple to enjoy as Ti Top Island. It is a small limestone island with two things to do, and you can choose either or both: climb the steps to a viewpoint over the bay, or walk down to a crescent beach and swim.

On Milalux Cruises it is the first stop of the final morning, before check-out and brunch. This guide covers what the island is, how the climb works, which ship visits, and how to make the most of a two-hour window.

Ti Top Island (also written Titov Island) is a small limestone island in Halong Bay with a crescent-shaped white-sand beach and a stone-step climb to a panoramic viewpoint. On Milalux Cruises it is the 07:30 stop on the last morning of both the 2D1N and 3D2N itineraries, before check-out and brunch on the way back to Tuan Chau.

What Is Ti Top Island and Why Is It Named After Titov?

Ti Top Island sits in Halong Bay, Quang Ninh Province, about 7 to 8 km southeast of Bai Chay Port. It is named after Soviet cosmonaut Gherman Titov, who visited with President Ho Chi Minh on 22 January 1962.

According to the Ti Tốp Island entry on Wikipedia, Ho Chi Minh renamed the island in honour of the visit, and a monument to Titov was erected there in 2015. The island has steep banks on most sides and one gently sloping side with a white-sand beach. Seen from above, the beach is shaped like a crescent moon, and the tide regularly washes the sand clean.

The island lies across the water from Sung Sot Cave on Bo Hon Island, which Milalux guests visit on Day 1. If you are building a plan around both stops, our guide to Sung Sot (Surprise) Cave covers the cave side of the pairing. Halong Bay itself is part of the Ha Long Bay – Cat Ba Archipelago World Heritage site, which UNESCO extended in 2023, as reported by Vietnam’s national tourism authority.

The Climb and the Beach: What to Expect

At Ti Top you can climb roughly 400 stone steps to the summit for a wide view over the bay, or stay at the foot of the hill and swim from the beach. The final-morning programme leaves a window for both.

Choice What you do Best for
Climb to the summit Walk the stone steps up the hill to the viewpoint Panoramic photographs and a morning workout
Swim at the beach Enter the clear, calm water from the white sand Relaxing, families, anyone avoiding stairs
Do both Climb first, then cool off in the sea Guests who like to use the whole window

The hilltop view. The Milalux programme describes the island as having one of the best sandy beaches in Halong Bay, with a hike to the top for stunning panoramic views. Published step counts vary slightly by source, so think of it as a climb of a few hundred steps rather than an exact number. Take it at your own pace and stop at the landings to look back at the bay.

The beach. The sheltered crescent below the hill has clear water and soft sand, and it is the swimming stop of the Halong Bay itinerary. Beach swimming is offered when the weather permits.

🌿 Local Naturalist:
“Halong Bay’s islands are limestone karst, and Ti Top has steep banks on most sides and one sloping shore, where the white sand forms a crescent. Because the tide regularly washes this sand, treat it as a natural beach: take your litter back to the boat, keep to the steps on the hillside and leave plants and shells where they are.”

🧭 Cruise Director’s Insider Tip:
“The last morning runs on a tight, pleasant schedule: Tai Chi on the Sundeck at 06:15, coffee, tea and pastries at 06:30, Ti Top at 07:30 and back aboard at 09:30 to check out. Decide the night before whether you want the summit or the beach, wear shoes with grip, and keep swimwear and a small towel in a dry bag so you are not packing wet clothes before brunch.”

Best Time to Visit Ti Top Island

The climb is most comfortable in the cooler, milder months, and the 07:30 morning slot avoids the hottest hours in summer. Swimming suits warmer weather, while in winter many guests choose the hike and the view.

Season What to expect Plan
Spring (March–May) Warming weather, good for walking Light layers for the early start
Summer (June–August) Hot and humid, with the chance of storms Climb early, carry water, swim afterwards
Autumn (September–November) Mild and comfortable for the climb The easiest season for hike plus swim
Winter (December–February) Cooler mornings Bring a warm layer; hiking is more popular than swimming

Weather also decides whether the beach stop runs, so itineraries can change. For month-by-month detail, see our guide to the best time to visit Halong Bay.
