Halong Bay 2 Days 1 Night Cruise: Your Hour-by-Hour Travel Guide

Aerial view of a white Milalux cruise ship sailing between green limestone islands in Halong Bay
Milalux sails the Halong Bay route on its 2 Days 1 Night itinerary.

A Halong Bay 2 days 1 night cruise is the format most first-time visitors choose. It is long enough for a cave, time on the water, a sunset and a sunrise, and short enough to fit between Hanoi and the next leg of a Vietnam trip.

Our two ships run different 2D1N routes. Milalux Cruises stays in Halong Bay; Mila Grand Cruises sails into Lan Ha Bay and reaches Cat Ba Island on the second morning. This guide lays out both schedules, the pier logistics and what to pack, so you can choose with the real timings in front of you.

A Halong Bay 2 days 1 night cruise leaves Tuan Chau Marina around midday and returns the next morning, with about 150 km and roughly 2.5 hours by expressway between Hanoi and the pier. Milalux Cruises (20 cabins) visits Pearl Farm, Sung Sot Cave and Titov Island; Mila Grand Cruises (27 cabins) visits Dark & Bright Cave and Trung Trang Cave.

Which Itinerary Does a Halong Bay 2 Days 1 Night Cruise Follow?

It depends on the ship. Milalux covers Halong Bay with Pearl Farm, Sung Sot Cave and Titov Island. Mila Grand covers Lan Ha Bay with Dark & Bright Cave, then Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba Island. Both include a sunset, a cooking demonstration, squid fishing and Tai Chi on the sundeck. The bay itself is a World Heritage property, with the Cat Ba Archipelago added as an extension (IUCN).

Day 1 afternoon Pearl Farm and kayaking at 14:30; Sung Sot Cave at 16:00 Dark & Bright Cave at 15:30 by bamboo boat or kayak, then a swim
Day 1 evening Sunset Party at 17:45, Deluxe Dinner at 19:30, squid fishing from 21:00 Happy Hour and spring-roll class at 17:30, dinner at 19:00 on the sundeck or in the 2nd-floor restaurant
Day 2 morning Tai Chi 06:15, Titov Island at 07:30, brunch at 10:00 Tai Chi 06:00, Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba at 07:30, lunch at 09:40

Getting to the Pier at Tuan Chau Marina

Both ships board at Tuan Chau Marina in Halong City, about 2.5 hours from Hanoi by expressway. The Hanoi transfer is not part of the cruise price; it is booked as an extra service, and you can also make your own way to the pier.

Vietnam Tourism describes the drive from Hanoi to Ha Long as roughly two and a half hours by expressway, with cruise transfers leaving from Tuan Chau and Bai Chay ports (Vietnam Tourism). Allow for traffic on the way out of Hanoi.

🧭 Cruise Director’s Insider Tip:
“Be ready ten minutes before your pickup time. Old Quarter streets are narrow and the bus can run late in traffic. Wear sneakers on the day: the tender transfer on Mila Grand and the climb at Sung Sot Cave on Milalux are both easier in shoes with grip.”

Day 1 and Day 2 on Milalux: Halong Bay

Milalux uses the two days for Halong Bay’s best-known sights: Pearl Farm, Sung Sot Cave and Titov Island. The pace is relaxed, with lunch served as the ship passes the bay’s famous rock formations.

At 12:30 lunch is served as the ship passes Incense Burner Islet, Dog Stone Islet, Fighting Cock Islet and Three Coconuts Island. At 14:30 guests visit Pearl Farm and kayak close to the limestone walls, then at 16:00 climb to Sung Sot Cave on Bo Hon Island, the largest limestone cave in the bay, where stalactites and stalagmites formed over millions of years.

Sung Sot Cave is on Day 1 of the Milalux 2D1N at 16:00.

Back on board at 17:45 the Sunset Party starts on the sundeck, with a cooking demonstration and the Happy Hour offer (buy 2, get 1 free). Deluxe Dinner is at 19:30. After dinner you can fish for squid, watch a film in the cabin, play cards or chess, or sit out on deck.

Day 2 starts with Tai Chi at 06:15 and coffee, tea and pastries at 06:30. At 07:30 the ship reaches Titov Island, where you can swim from the sandy beach or hike to the top for a panoramic view. Check-out is at 09:30, brunch is served at 10:00 on the way back, and the ship docks at about 11:30.

Day 1 and Day 2 on Mila Grand: Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba

Mila Grand sails away from the busiest routes into Lan Ha Bay, then crosses to Cat Ba Island on the second morning. Its 2D1N centres on Dark & Bright Cave and Trung Trang Cave.

After the 12:15 tender and a 13:00 lunch underway, guests reach Dark & Bright Cave at 15:30. You choose between a bamboo boat rowed by a local boatman and kayaking, then swim in the water around the ship. Happy Hour and a spring-roll class with the chef follow at 17:30, and dinner is at 19:00 on the sundeck if the weather allows, otherwise in the 2nd-floor restaurant. Evenings can include squid fishing, spa services at a surcharge, or time in the outdoor Jacuzzi.

Guests on the Mila Grand 2D1N explore Dark & Bright Cave by kayak or bamboo boat.

Day 2 begins with Tai Chi at 06:00 and a light breakfast at 06:45. At 07:30 guests travel about 30 minutes from Gia Luan to Trung Trang Cave, one of the most impressive caves on Cat Ba Island, inside the Cat Ba World Biosphere Reserve. Lunch is served at 09:40 as the ship returns, and check-out is at about 11:00.

🌿 Local Naturalist:
“Trung Trang Cave lies on Cat Ba Island, part of the Cat Ba World Biosphere Reserve. Sung Sot, the Surprise Cave on Milalux, sits on Bo Hon Island. In both caves keep to the marked paths, avoid touching the formations and carry out whatever you bring in.”

Is 2 Days 1 Night Enough, or Should You Choose 3 Days 2 Nights?

Two days suits a first visit; three days suits travellers who want a slower pace and a full day beyond the ship. The extra night adds a day-boat day rather than longer sailing.

On Milalux the 3 Days 2 Nights itinerary takes a day boat deeper into Lan Ha Bay for kayaking and a swim at Ba Trai Dao. On Mila Grand it adds cycling at Viet Hai Village and Ba Trai Dao beach. The 2D1N remains the better fit if you have a tight schedule or are travelling with young children for the first time.

What to pack: light, breathable clothes for the day; shoes with grip for caves and island steps; swimwear; a light jacket for evenings on deck; insect repellent, since the US CDC lists dengue as a year-round risk in Vietnam (CDC); a camera or phone with a dry bag.

When to go: Vietnam Tourism lists September to November as the best period for Ha Long, with autumn and spring calm and clear; summer is hot with a risk of storms. Our guide to the best time to visit Halong Bay explains each season. See the Mila Grand cabins if you are comparing cabin categories.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is one night enough on a Halong Bay cruise?

Yes, for a first visit. One night gives you a cave, kayaking or bamboo boating, a sunset, dinner on board and Tai Chi at sunrise. Choose three days and two nights if you want a day-boat day with extra kayaking, swimming or village time.

What time do I get back to Hanoi?

Both 2D1N itineraries list a return to Hanoi at about 14:30. Milalux docks at about 11:30 and Mila Grand guests check out at about 11:00. Traffic can change the exact time, so book onward flights or trains for the evening.

Which ship should I choose for 2 days 1 night?

Choose Milalux for Halong Bay highlights and Mila Grand for Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba. Milalux (20 cabins, 47 m) offers Sung Sot Cave and Titov Island. Mila Grand (27 cabins, 60.20 m) offers Dark & Bright Cave, Trung Trang Cave and a heated outdoor Jacuzzi.

Is the transfer from Hanoi included?

No, it is booked separately. Hotel pickup from the Old Quarter, including a Limousine on Mila Grand, is an extra service. The cruise price covers your cabin, meals listed in the itinerary, activities, sightseeing tickets, an English-speaking guide and the welcome drink.

What happens if the weather is bad?

Activities run weather permitting, and the crew may adjust the programme. If a cruise is cancelled because of storms, bad weather or a port authority ban, it is free of charge or can be rescheduled by agreement.

Can children join a 2 Days 1 Night cruise?

Yes. One child under 5 sharing a bed with parents is free, children aged 5 to 10 pay 75% of the adult rate, and guests aged 11 and over pay the adult rate. Family cabins and connecting rooms are available on both ships.

Top 10 Things to Know Before Booking a Halong Bay Cruise

Mila Cruises ship anchored in calm green water beside limestone islands in Halong Bay
A Mila Cruises ship at anchor in the sheltered water between the islands of Halong Bay.

Choosing a Halong Bay cruise looks simple until the listings blur together: one night or two, Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay, what the price covers, which ship. A few decisions made before you pay shape most of the trip.

This checklist covers ten of them, in the order most travellers meet them. It draws on the current itineraries of Milalux Cruises and Mila Grand Cruises, and points to our longer guides where a topic needs more room.

The main things to know before booking a Halong Bay cruise are trip length (2 Days 1 Night or 3 Days 2 Nights), the ship and route, what the price includes, pier timings, the season, onboard facilities, itinerary pace, recent reviews and how early you book. Milalux Cruises (20 cabins) sails Halong Bay; Mila Grand Cruises (27 cabins) sails Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba.

Choose the Trip Length, the Ship and the Route

Start with time, then match the ship and route to the kind of stay you want. Two days and one night covers the main sights; three days and two nights adds a full day beyond the ship.

1. Match the duration to your time

A day cruise gives a quick look at the bay but no sunrise, no sunset on deck and no night on the water. An overnight cruise adds all three. The 2 Days 1 Night format fits most first visits: one cave, a kayak or bamboo boat session, sunset, dinner and Tai Chi at dawn. Our hour-by-hour guide to the 2 Days 1 Night cruise shows how that plays out on each ship.

The 3 Days 2 Nights itinerary adds a day-boat day. From Milalux the day boat goes deeper into Lan Ha Bay, with kayaking at Trinh Nu Cave and Roster Cave and a swim at Ba Trai Dao. From Mila Grand it goes to Viet Hai Village, where guests cycle or ride an electric car for about 30 minutes, and then to Ba Trai Dao beach.

2. Decide how much comfort you want

Every cabin on both ships has a private balcony, so the difference between categories is space, layout and views rather than whether you have outdoor space. Milalux suites run from 22 m² to 44 m² for family layouts; Mila Grand suites run from 45 m² to the 135 m² President Suite. See the Milalux cabins and the Mila Grand cabins for each category.

Bedroom of a Milalux suite with a white bed, dark wood panelling and sunlit bay views through the balcony doors
Milalux cabins each have a private balcony facing the bay.

3. Pick your route: Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay

Milalux sails the classic Halong Bay route. Mila Grand sails Lan Ha Bay and the Cat Ba Archipelago, away from the busiest cruise lanes. The bay is a World Heritage property, with the Cat Ba Archipelago added as an extension (IUCN). Our comparison of Halong Bay and Lan Ha Bay routes goes through the differences in detail.

Criteria Milalux Cruises Mila Grand Cruises
Cabins 20 27
Length × width 47 m × 11 m 60.20 m × 13 m
Route Halong Bay Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba
2D1N highlights Pearl Farm kayaking, Sung Sot Cave, Titov Island Dark & Bright Cave, Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba
Balcony Every cabin Every cabin
Character Iron hull, nostalgic rustic charm, warm wood Classic Indochine style, Sundeck for 130 guests, outdoor heated Jacuzzi

⚓ Captain’s Maritime Log:
“Size changes the feel on board. Milalux is 47 m long and 11 m wide; Mila Grand is 60.20 m long and 13 m wide. Both anchor for the night in the shelter of the islands, and the crew and the port authority decide each day whether the programme can run as planned. If departures are banned for weather, the cruise is cancelled free of charge or rescheduled by agreement.”

Know What the Price Includes and When You Move

Cruise packages cover your cabin, meals on board, activities and sightseeing fees, but not the Hanoi to Tuan Chau transfer. Check inclusions line by line, then confirm pickup and return times against your flights.

4. Check what is included in the price

Packages are not identical across operators, so compare the lists rather than the headline. For Milalux and Mila Grand the usual split is:

Included Not included
Cabin with private balcony Hanoi to Tuan Chau transfer (Limousine and shuttle are booked as an extra service)
All meals listed in the itinerary Spa and massage
Kayaking or bamboo boating, Tai Chi, cooking demonstration, squid fishing (weather and season permitting) Drinks ordered at the bar and restaurant
English-speaking guide and sightseeing tickets Tips and personal expenses
Welcome drink, two bottles of water in each cabin

Vegetarian menus are available; mention any dietary needs when you book. Our price guide explains how length, cabin, season and children affect the total.

5. Confirm departure and return times

On a 2 Days 1 Night cruise, Milalux guests are collected from Hanoi Old Quarter hotels between 07:45 and 08:45 if they have booked the transfer, check in at about 11:30 and board at 12:00. Mila Grand guests check in at the Private Lounge at Lot 20, Tuan Chau Marina at 11:30 and take the tender at 12:15. On the final day Milalux docks at about 11:30 and Mila Grand guests check out at about 11:00; both itineraries list a return to Hanoi at about 14:30.

🧭 Cruise Director’s Insider Tip:
“Treat 14:30 as the earliest Hanoi arrival, not a promise to the minute, because road traffic varies. Plan flights or trains for the evening. Pack proper shoes for Sung Sot Cave on Milalux, as the climb can be wet, and keep your booking confirmation handy for check-in at the lounge.”

Weigh the Season, the Facilities and the Pace

Autumn and spring bring the calmest, clearest conditions; summer is hot with a risk of storms. After weather, look at what the ship offers on deck and how much time the itinerary leaves you between stops.

6. Consider the season

Vietnam’s official tourism site lists September to November as the best period for Ha Long, with autumn and spring offering calm, clear weather for cruising, and warns that summer is hot and can bring storms (Vietnam Tourism). Winter is cooler and often misty, better for a quiet, atmospheric trip than for swimming. Our season-by-season guide to the best time to visit Halong Bay covers each month.

7. Look at the onboard facilities

Decide what matters in the evenings. Both ships run an evening programme around sunset, and both offer a spa that is booked and paid for separately. Mila Grand adds a Sundeck for up to 130 guests and an outdoor heated Jacuzzi; Milalux offers a bar, a sundeck and a film or board-game evening in the cabin.

Dinner tables set on the Milalux sundeck at sunset above the bay
The sundeck is the setting for sunset on the 2 Days 1 Night itinerary.

8. Review the itinerary carefully

A good itinerary has a few well-chosen stops and time to rest between them. On Day 1 of the Milalux 2D1N, for example, the day runs: lunch at 12:30, Pearl Farm and kayaking at 14:30, Sung Sot Cave at 16:00, sunset at 17:45 and dinner at 19:30. That is a full day with room to breathe. Programmes can change with weather and sea conditions.

Read Reviews and Book at the Right Time

Read recent reviews for service, food and cleanliness, then book early for holidays and summer. Free cancellation applies only when you cancel more than 60 days before departure.

9. Read reviews from other travellers

TripAdvisor and Google Reviews are the most useful places to check. Look for patterns: how guests describe the crew, the quality of meals, the condition of the cabins, and how the excursions ran. Check that the review is about the ship you are booking.

10. Book early for peak dates

Public holidays, summer and the year-end season are popular, and booking one to two months ahead gives you a wider choice of cabins. Travel and medical insurance is a separate decision; the US CDC suggests considering medical evacuation cover for trips in Vietnam (CDC). The cancellation terms below apply to both ships.

Cancellation window Charge
More than 60 days before departure Free
60 to 31 days 50% of the booking
30 to 15 days 75% of the booking
Fewer than 15 days, or no-show 100% of the booking
Cruise cancelled for storms, bad weather or a port ban Free, or rescheduled by agreement

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How many days do I need for a Halong Bay cruise?

Two days and one night is enough for a first visit. It gives you a cave, kayaking or bamboo boating, a sunset and a sunrise on the bay. Choose three days and two nights if you want a full day away from the ship, with Lan Ha Bay and Ba Trai Dao on Milalux or Viet Hai Village on Mila Grand.

Is Halong Bay or Lan Ha Bay better for a first cruise?

Both show the same limestone-island scenery, so it comes down to the highlights you want. Milalux sails Halong Bay with Sung Sot Cave and Titov Island on its 2D1N. Mila Grand sails Lan Ha Bay with Dark & Bright Cave and Trung Trang Cave, away from the busiest lanes.

Is transport from Hanoi included in the cruise price?

No, the Hanoi to Tuan Chau transfer is not included. It is an extra service that can be booked with the cruise, including Limousine transfers. The drive takes roughly two and a half hours by expressway, according to Vietnam’s tourism board, and pickups are arranged from the Hanoi Old Quarter.

Can I cancel for free?

Yes, if you cancel more than 60 days before departure. Later cancellations carry a charge of 50%, 75% or 100% depending on how close the date is. A cruise cancelled because of storms, bad weather or a port authority ban is free of charge or can be rescheduled by agreement.

What do children pay?

One child under 5 sharing a bed with parents is free, and children aged 5 to 10 pay 75% of the adult rate. Guests aged 11 and over pay the adult rate. With two children under 5 in one cabin, the first is free and the second pays 50% of the adult rate.

Halong Bay limestone islands and cruise boats seen from above under a soft sky

Best Time to Visit Halong Bay: A Season-by-Season Guide

There is no single “perfect” month for a Halong Bay cruise – each season changes the light, the water and the mood of the bay. This guide explains what to expect from spring, summer, autumn and winter, how the storm season can affect sailings, and how to pick dates that suit your trip on board Milalux & MilaGrand.

Quick Answer: When Is the Best Time to Visit Halong Bay?

For most travellers, the best time to visit Halong Bay is March to May and late September to November. These months usually bring comfortable temperatures, calmer seas and good visibility for kayaking, swimming and sunset on the sundeck. Summer suits travellers who want warm water and long days, while winter rewards those who enjoy cool air, quiet routes and misty karst views.

Spring (March – May): Mild and Fresh

Weather

Spring warms up gradually, from cool, sometimes misty mornings in March to pleasant, sunny days by May. Light drizzle is common early in the season, while late April and May are typically brighter.

Why go

  • Comfortable conditions for kayaking and exploring caves such as Sung Sot Cave.
  • Seas are generally calm, which suits first-time cruisers and families.
  • May is a great month to start swimming in the bay.

Good to know

Early-spring mist can soften the views of the limestone islands – beautiful for photos, less ideal if you want crystal-clear panoramas.

Summer (June – August): Warm Water and Long Days

Weather

Summer is hot and humid, with sunny spells broken by short, heavy showers. The sea is at its warmest, making this the best time for swimming at beaches such as Titov Island or Ba Trai Dao in Lan Ha Bay.

Why go

  • Ideal for water activities: swimming, kayaking and bamboo boat trips.
  • Long evenings for Happy Hour and sunset on the sundeck.
  • Popular with families during school holidays.

Good to know

Summer overlaps with the tropical storm season, so keep your plans flexible (see below) and pack sun protection.

Autumn (September – November): Clear Skies and Calm Seas

Weather

September can still see storms, but from October the bay usually turns drier, sunnier and cooler. Visibility is often excellent, and the water stays warm enough for a swim into early November.

Why go

  • One of the most pleasant times for every activity on the itinerary.
  • Beautiful golden light at sunrise during the Tai Chi session and at sunset.
  • A great season for the longer 3 Days 2 Nights itinerary, which adds a full day in Lan Ha Bay.

Winter (December – February): Quiet, Cool and Misty

Weather

Winter brings cool temperatures, cloudy skies and occasional drizzle. Swimming is less appealing, but the bay is calm and atmospheric, with mist drifting between the karst peaks.

Why go

Good to know

Bring a warm layer for the sundeck in the evening and early morning.

Storm Season: Can a Cruise Be Suspended?

Tropical storms can affect northern Vietnam roughly from June to October. When the weather is unsafe, the Halong Bay management authorities may temporarily suspend cruise departures, and itineraries can change at short notice. Weather and tide levels can also lead to kayaking or swimming being cancelled.

According to our Payment & Policy page, a cruise cancelled due to bad weather or force majeure is free of charge. Our FAQs explain how refunds work if the trip is cancelled before departure or shortened during the journey.

Tips for Choosing Your Dates

  • Book early for peak months such as spring, autumn and the year-end holidays, especially if you want a specific suite category.
  • Keep a buffer day before an international flight, particularly between June and October.
  • Choose the right length: the 2 Days 1 Night trip is perfect for a short stay, while 3 Days 2 Nights gives more time and more flexibility if the weather changes.
  • Plan your transfer: Hanoi – Halong transfers are booked separately – see Transportation.
  • Tell us your preferences (dietary needs, celebrations) when booking so the crew can prepare.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the best month for a Halong Bay cruise?

For most travellers the best months are March to May and late September to November. These months usually bring comfortable temperatures, calmer seas and good visibility for kayaking, swimming and sunset on the sundeck. Summer suits those who want warm water, and winter suits those who prefer cool, misty, quiet views.

Can I swim during a Halong Bay cruise in winter?

Swimming is offered weather permitting. From December to February the air and water are cool and swimming is less appealing, but the bay is calm and atmospheric. Many winter guests prefer the cabin balcony, the restaurant, the spa and the sundeck with a warm layer.

Can a cruise be cancelled because of a storm?

Yes. Tropical storms can affect northern Vietnam roughly from June to October, and the Halong Bay management authorities may temporarily suspend departures. A cruise cancelled because of bad weather or force majeure is free of charge, as set out on our Payment & Policy page.

Which season is best for the 3 Days 2 Nights itinerary?

Autumn is a great season for the longer 3 Days 2 Nights itinerary, which adds a full day in Lan Ha Bay. From October the bay usually turns drier and sunnier, with excellent visibility and golden light at sunrise and sunset. A longer trip also gives more flexibility if the weather changes.

When should I book my Halong Bay cruise?

Book early for peak months such as spring, autumn and the year-end holidays, especially if you want a specific suite category. If you fly internationally between June and October, keep a buffer day in case the weather affects sailings.

Are transfers from Hanoi included in the cruise price?

No. Hanoi to Halong transfers are booked separately, so tell us your travel plans when you reserve and the team will help you arrange the transfer.

Halong Bay Cruise vs Resort: Top 5 Reasons to Choose a Cruise

Aerial view of cruise ships anchored among limestone islands in the emerald water of Halong Bay
Cruise ships anchor among the islands of Halong Bay, where the best scenery is on the water.

Most trips to a coast start with a hotel or resort. In Halong Bay the scenery is spread across thousands of limestone islands, so where you sleep decides how much of it you see. A resort gives you one view and a base on land; a cruise gives you the bay itself.

This comparison sets the two side by side and gives five reasons why many guests choose to sleep on the water with Milalux Cruises or Mila Grand Cruises. It also says plainly when a resort may suit you better.

In a Halong Bay cruise vs resort comparison, a cruise wins on access and scenery: you sleep among the islands, reach caves and lagoons by boat, and meals, guide, activities and sightseeing tickets sit in one itinerary. Milalux Cruises (20 cabins) and Mila Grand Cruises (27 cabins) keep guest numbers small, while a resort suits travellers who want a fixed base on land.

Halong Bay Cruise vs Resort at a Glance

A cruise moves with the scenery and bundles activities into one itinerary; a resort stays in one place and relies on day trips. The table compares the points that matter most when you plan.

Criteria Cruise with Milalux or Mila Grand Resort stay
View Changes with the anchorage, from sunset to sunrise One fixed view from the shore
Reaching caves and lagoons By ship, kayak, bamboo boat or day boat Needs a separate boat tour
Meals and activities Meals, kayaking, Tai Chi, cooking demonstration and sightseeing tickets in one itinerary Usually arranged and paid for separately
Scale and privacy 20 cabins on Milalux, 27 on Mila Grand Depends on the property
Time on land Short: cave and island stops, then back on board Unlimited
Best for Scenery, kayaking, a first visit to the bay A long stay in one place, beach time ashore

1. Wake Up to a New View

On a cruise the view changes between evening and morning, and the water is the setting. At sunset you are anchored among the islands, and on Day 2 you wake in a different light with limestone cliffs outside the balcony door.

Resort scenery stays the same. On board, the programme moves around it: Tai Chi on the sundeck at 06:15 on Milalux or 06:00 on Mila Grand, then Titov Island on Milalux or Trung Trang Cave on Cat Ba from Mila Grand. Every cabin on both ships has a private balcony, so the bay is outside your door.

The Milalux Royal Suite Balcony measures 35 m² and opens onto the bay.

2. One Itinerary for Stay, Dining and Exploring

A cruise puts accommodation, meals, guided excursions and sightseeing tickets into a single plan. You do not arrange separate boat tours, and the programme is adjusted for weather and sea conditions.

The cruise price includes your cabin, all meals listed in the itinerary, kayaking or bamboo boating, a cooking demonstration, Tai Chi, squid fishing (weather and season permitting), an English-speaking guide, sightseeing tickets and a welcome drink. The Hanoi to Tuan Chau transfer is an extra service, and spa, bar drinks and tips are paid on board. Our price guide explains how each factor affects the total, and the 2 Days 1 Night guide shows the hours.

👨‍🍳 Executive Chef’s Note:
“Dining is part of the programme rather than an add-on. On Mila Grand the evening begins with Happy Hour and a spring-roll class with the chef at 17:30, then dinner at 19:00 on the sundeck when the weather allows or in the 2nd-floor restaurant. On Milalux, the Sunset Party at 17:45 leads to the Deluxe Dinner at 19:30.”

3. Places Only a Boat Reaches

Some of the bay’s best stops are on the water, and a ship or day boat gets you there. Lagoons, cave entrances and island beaches are reached by kayak, bamboo boat or day boat, not by road.

On Mila Grand’s 2 Days 1 Night, guests reach Dark & Bright Cave in Lan Ha Bay by bamboo boat rowed by a local boatman or by kayak, then swim around the ship. The 3 Days 2 Nights adds a day boat to Viet Hai Village on Cat Ba Island and to Ba Trai Dao beach. On Milalux the 3 Days 2 Nights day boat goes deeper into Lan Ha Bay for kayaking at Trinh Nu Cave and Roster Cave. Our guide to Halong Bay vs Lan Ha Bay routes compares the two.

Kayaking is included in the cruise price, weather permitting.

4. Small-Scale Hospitality and Privacy

A boutique ship has only 20 to 27 cabins, so service stays personal. Milalux has 20 cabins and Mila Grand 27, each with a private balcony.

⚓ Captain’s Maritime Log:
“A ship of 47 m or 60.20 m is small enough to anchor in sheltered water between the islands, away from the main channels. The crew and the port authority decide each day whether the programme can run. If departures are banned for a storm, the cruise is cancelled free of charge or rescheduled by agreement.”

5. Closer to the Landscape

A cruise puts you inside a World Heritage landscape instead of looking at it from shore. Ha Long Bay is a World Heritage site, with the Cat Ba Archipelago added later as an extension, and IUCN’s World Heritage Outlook notes that it includes some 1,600 islands and islets (IUCN).

On board you hear the water and the wind rather than traffic, and you see the islands change colour at sunset and sunrise. Vietnam Tourism describes boats sailing through green waters among limestone islands, stopping at caves that visitors can explore (Vietnam Tourism). That is the experience a cruise is built around. The best months are September to November, when autumn weather is calm and clear.

When a Resort May Suit You Better

Choose a resort if you want a fixed base on land and long days ashore. A cruise has short stops, time on board and limits on how long you spend on the beach.

If you are travelling with children, a cruise can still work: one child under 5 sharing a bed with parents is free and ages 5 to 10 pay 75% of the adult rate. Our guide on travelling with kids explains the family cabins and routines. You can also combine the two: a night or two on the water for the bay, then a beach stay elsewhere. Wherever you sleep, pack insect repellent, as the US CDC lists dengue as a year-round risk in Vietnam (CDC).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Is a Halong Bay cruise better than a resort?

For scenery and access, yes. A cruise puts you among the islands and includes caves, kayaking and meals in one itinerary. A resort is better if you want a long stay in one place with time ashore.

Is a cruise more convenient than staying at a resort?

Often yes, because the programme is arranged for you. Meals, activities, sightseeing tickets and a guide are included. The Hanoi to Tuan Chau transfer is an extra service you add when booking.

Do cruise cabins feel as private as a resort room?

Yes, with a private balcony in every cabin. Milalux has 20 cabins and Mila Grand 27, and Mila Grand’s President Suite is 135 m². Spa services are booked separately.

Can families choose a cruise instead of a resort?

Yes. One child under 5 sharing a bed with parents is free, children aged 5 to 10 pay 75% of the adult rate, and guests aged 11 and over pay the adult rate. Family Suites on Milalux and Junior Connecting rooms on Mila Grand suit larger parties.

Can I cancel for free?

Yes, if you cancel more than 60 days before departure. Later cancellations carry a charge of 50%, 75% or 100%. A cruise cancelled for storms, bad weather or a port ban is free of charge or rescheduled by agreement.

What is the best time of year for a Halong Bay cruise?

September to November is listed as the best period. Autumn and spring are calm and clear, and summer is hot with a risk of storms, according to Vietnam Tourism.
